Help patients with serious mental illness get the care they need

Expanded benefits for UnitedHealthcare Community Plan Medicaid members in Florida include Serious Mental Illness specialty plans

Last month, we introduced expanded member benefits and resources available to UnitedHealthcare Medicaid members in Florida. From a monthly over-the-counter medication and supply allowance to housing and food assistance, these benefits are designed to help make health care better for everyone.

We’ve also updated benefits to help patients with mental health illnesses, such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, get the care and support they need.

New Medicaid specialty plan details

Florida’s Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) program recently launched Serious Mental Illness (SMI) specialty plans to address gaps in care. There are multiple SMI plans to select from (varying by county and region) and all are voluntary. Members can decide if they want to stay with their existing Medicaid plan or opt in to a specialty plan with their choice of an enrolling Medicaid managed care organization.

These plans include a dedicated care coordinator that can help members:

  • Find the right care
  • Schedule appointments and rides
  • Facilitate communication with care providers
  • Identify and coordinate access to resources (e.g., affordable housing, healthy food, clothing, utility support, other social services)

Member eligibility

Florida’s SMMC determines eligibility. If a member meets SMI criteria, they’ll receive a notification letter from SMMC with enrollment instructions.

For members who are 6 years or older, the following diagnoses are eligible:

  • F2 – Psychotic disorders (includes schizophrenia and delusional disorders)
  • F30, F31 – Bipolar disorders (includes manic episodes)
  • F32, F33, F34, F39 – Mood disorders (includes major depression)
  • F4 – Anxiety disorders (includes stress-related anxiety)
  • F50, F53, F60, F63, F68, F69, F91, F98, F99 – Other mental health disorders
  • T1491 – Suicide attempt

How members can enroll

Members can enroll throughout the year in one of the following ways:

  • Follow the instructions found in the SMMC notification letter
  • Call Medicaid Choice Counselors at 877-711-3662
